Japanese and Spanish Producers Triumph at the World Steak Challenge 2025
Large Producer Award
Arita Wagyu Co.
Arita Wagyu Co impressed the judges by redefining what large-scale Wagyu production can be, blending tradition, innovation, and sustainability to an exceptional standard. They are among Japan’s few major producers to raise Wagyu cattle on free-range pasture, ensuring animal welfare and natural living conditions across their herd of 7,500 Japanese Black cattle. This commitment to ethical farming is supported by a closed-loop agricultural system that minimises waste and maximises community benefit. The manure is composted to grow pesticide-free potatoes, rice straw from local farmers is recycled as feed and bedding, and barns are powered by solar energy.
Beyond sustainability, Arita Wagyu Co delivers outstanding quality through meticulous practices, including a bespoke feed formula, slow fattening for superior texture, and hydration with deep mineral water. All of these elements contribute to elevated oleic acid levels and a flavour profile celebrated by Michelin-starred chefs worldwide. Their antibiotic-free, hormone-free approach, combined with a mission to train the next generation of farmers, sets a global benchmark for responsible, high-performance beef production.
Small Producer Award
Vacum Carnes De Lujo
Vacum Carnes De Lujo stood out for their commitment to animal welfare, sustainability, and the preservation of livestock heritage. The judges were impressed by the company’s innovative approach, including the use of GPS collars to monitor cattle movements and ensure they develop under optimal conditions. Their extensive farming model allows animals to roam freely in high mountain pastures, enjoying natural water sources and a stress-free environment. These practices directly enhance meat quality, delivering authentic flavour and exceptional texture.
Beyond innovation, Vacum Carnes De Lujo champions small farmers and family-run operations, particularly those with fewer than 20 animals, strengthening local economies and ensuring traditional farming practices endure. Their decade-long project to revive the extinct Mantequera Leonesa breed exemplifies their dedication to sustainability and excellence, involving over 200 farmers and helping to restore the breed. This approach combining ethical treatment, environmental harmony, and cultural preservation, sets a benchmark for quality and responsibility in beef production worldwide.
